Treasury Minister visits Northern Ireland to discuss VAT with business representatives
On the 10th of May, Financial Secretary to the Treasury Mel Stride MP, visited Belfast to discuss the current consultation on VAT and APD with Northern Irish business leaders. Following the meeting, Stride wrote a piece for the Belfast Telegraph extolling the virtues of the Northern Irish economy and the tourism industry specifically.
In the piece Stride lauded the growth of tourism and the creative industries in Northern Ireland, citing the filming of Game of Thrones in the province. He added that this growth was not by chance and was due to the beneficial tax environment the UK government had cultivated for these industries in Northern Ireland, specifically the tax reliefs offered to the creative industries.
In the meeting, and later in the article, Stride urged the tourism industry in Northern Ireland to contribute their views to the consultation into the rate of VAT and APD levied and ensure that their voices were heard.
The consultation is open until the 5th of June and submissions can be made here.
