The Tourism VAT Challenge for family businesses – Angela and Richard Cooper

Angela and Richard Cooper of Orford Mill Luxury Holiday Cottages, write to  explain how the UK’s high rate of Tourism VAT is a severe challenge for their business:

We have a Holiday Complex in North Devon comprising of 9 cottages. We cannot afford any staff – my wife and I run it ourselves and for each day that passes we go deeper into debt.  For the tourist industry in the South West it is most important that VAT is cut to 5%. We only have income for 3 months of the year so to take 20% of our income (which incidentally we cannot add to our prices the 20% comes straight out of our income) is destroying businesses at an alarming rate.

Unless the Government make this cut shortly many more businesses will go under. Why is it we are the only country in Europe that has not reduced the VAT to 5% in tourism. With high tourism VAT the Government is being short-sighted and hurting local businesses and communities.
